Traveling can be one of the most rewarding experiences, but it can also come with a lot of stress. Even as a seasoned traveler, I’m constantly learning new travel tips! On my most recent trip to Dubai, I used an offline map on Google Maps for the first time and it was such a game changer!

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first adventure, I believe there’s something new to learn for every traveler out there. Here are some travel tips & hacks I’ve learned over the years – I hope these will help you make the most of your trip!

Planning Your Trip

Give yourself plenty of time to plan your next adventure. The exact amount of time that’s needed to plan will depend on your specific travel plans – international, elaborate, or long-term trips can take 6+ months of planning while domestic or short-term trips can be planned 1-2 months in advance.

I’ve found that it’s best to give yourself as long as possible to start planning. This will help you stay organized and also snag the best deals when it comes to hotels, airfare, rental cars, experiences, & even restaurant reservations. A well-crafted itinerary can also reduce travel stress and make your trip more enjoyable!

  1. Research your destination including culture, customs, and local laws
  2. Check visa and passport requirements early to avoid last-minute issues
  3. Set a realistic budget and track your expenses
  4. Book flights and accommodations well in advance for the best deals
  5. Look into travel insurance to cover unexpected emergencies (or consider getting a travel credit card which may include this)
  6. Create a flexible itinerary with must-see attractions
  7. Consider the best time to visit based on weather and crowd levels
  8. Sign up for airline and hotel rewards programs for future discounts
  9. Learn basic phrases in the local language for easier communication
  10. Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member for safety purposes

Packing Smart

Packing efficiently will keep you organized, stress less, and ensure that you don’t forget anything. It may even save you from paying excessive baggage fees! Check out this post for a travel packing checklist with a FREE downloadable & editable PDF.

  1. Make a checklist to avoid forgetting essentials
  2. Pack versatile clothing that can be layered as well as mixed and matched
  3. Use packing cubes to maximize space and keep your suitcase organized
  4. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated at the airport and at your destination
  5. Pack travel-size toiletries to save space and comply with TSA + airline regulations
  6. Include a small first aid kit with basic medications and bandages
  7. Carry a power bank to keep your devices charged at all times
  8. Pack a lightweight, foldable bag for day trips or souvenirs (especially since many places are starting to ban plastic bags!)
  9. Wear your heaviest clothing items on the plane to save luggage space
  10. Always pack a change of clothes in your carry-on in case of lost checked luggage

Transportation Tips

We often get so busy planning out our trips and creating the perfect itinerary that we forget to think about how we’re going to get around at our destination! Make sure to research your destination well in advance to seek out the best mode of transportation. Getting around efficiently can save time and money while enhancing your travel experience.

  1. Compare transportation options to find the most cost-effective choice
  2. Use public transportation in larger cities to save money
  3. If you are driving or getting a rental car, make sure you take parking costs into consideration. Check your hotel’s policies since since some hotels charge for overnight parking
  4. Download offline maps to avoid getting lost in unfamiliar places – Google Maps is great for this!
  5. Arrive at the airport early to allow time for security checks – trust me, this reduces travel stress!
  6. Sign up for airline alerts to receive updates on flight changes
  7. Be mindful of baggage weight limits to avoid extra airline fees
  8. Consider overnight buses or trains to save on accommodation costs
  9. Rent a bike or walk to explore cities at a slower pace
  10. Keep important travel documents in a separate, secure location

Staying Safe While Traveling

Safety should always be a top priority when visiting new places, especially if you are traveling solo. Taking precautions can help you avoid scams, theft, and other travel mishaps.

  1. Keep copies of your passport and important documents in both digital and physical forms
  2. Be aware of common travel scams in your destination
  3. Use a money belt or hidden pouch to store cash and important cards
  4. Stay in well-reviewed accommodations with good security measures. I also like to make sure my hotel has a safe so I can store valuables, electronics, extra cash, and my passport
  5. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Also, be careful about using public transportation at odd hours
  6. Learn emergency contact numbers and nearest embassy locations
  7. Make sure you tell friends & family about your travel plans, and consider “sharing your location” with them on your smartphone
  8. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, remove yourself from the situation
  9. Use secure Wi-Fi connections and a VPN to protect your data
  10. Keep emergency cash separate from your main wallet in case of loss or theft

Saving Money on Travel

I strongly believe that you can travel no matter what your budget is! We often think that traveling on a budget means that we have to sacrifice comfort, but that is definitely not the case. With a few smart strategies, you can cut costs while still enjoying an amazing travel experience!

  1. Travel during off-peak seasons for lower prices and fewer crowds. January & February are my favorite months to travel because airfare & hotel costs are so much cheaper!
  2. Be flexible with travel dates to find the cheapest options
  3. Look for free activities and attractions in your destination – I promise you, they exist!
  4. Eat at local markets or street vendors to save on dining costs
  5. Use travel credit cards and rewards programs to stack up points and rewards
  6. If you’re going on a longer trip, book accommodations with a kitchenette so you can prepare your own meals and save money on eating out
  7. Take advantage of city tourism cards for discounts on transport and attractions
  8. Haggle at markets where bargaining is expected
  9. Use price comparison websites to find the best deals on flights and hotels
  10. Consider staying in hostels, guesthouses, or Airbnb for budget-friendly options
